Mezoamerican Archaeology

Bio:

Jan Szymański worked in various archaeological projects in Poland, Middle East (Israel), and South America (Peru). Since the final years of his undergraduate studies he focused on the Mezoamerican cultural area in general, and specifically on its architecture. Upon graduation in 2008 with the MA thesis titled "Round Structures in Pre-Columbian Maya Architecture", he became interested in the issue of ritual and environmental contexts of monumental architecture of the Maya.

He participated in the Uxula Archaeological Project in Mexico, conducted under the auspices of the University of Bonn, Germany, between 2009 and 2014. He also took part in other international archaeological projects at sites such as Chinikiha (Mexico), and Nakum, Uaxactun, and Tz'ibatnah, all in Guatemala.

In 2013 he defended his PhD with thesis titled "Between Death and Divinity. Rethinking the Significance of Triadic Groups in Ancient Maya Culture".

Research and Teaching:

Currently Dr. Szymański researches the issue of group identities and their architectural manifestations in the Maya Area. Two main areas of his interest are southern Quintana Roo in Mexico, and the eastern frontier of the Maya in western Honduras and El Salvador.

Dr Szymański teaches students at the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw, in both Polish and English. Current list of his courses and classes can be found here.
